Toivonen Gets Back On The Winning Track
FARGO, N.D. (3/21/15)—Isaac Toivoinen won the battle of freshmen at No.1 singles against No.17-ranked Gustavus. Toivonen's 6-2, 6-2 win was the only Concordia victory of the day as they lost 8-1 to perennial national powerhouse Gustavus.
Toivonen started his momentum in the doubles play when he paired with fellow freshman David Schneck and the pair lost a back-and-forth 9-7 decision at No.1 doubles. Toivonen and Schneck had a chance for the win but were unable to hold serve and lost in extra games.
Toivonen made sure there would be no extra games or super-set tie-breaker necessary in singles play. He cruised to the straight set victory over Tommy Entwistle who was the 2014 South Dakota State High School champion.
The victory is Toivonen's team-leading third of the season and snaps a four-match losing skid.
The other doubles bouts were both decided by identical 8-2 scores.
Schneck lost at No.3 singles 6-2, 6-1 while Zach Zitur fell 6-2, 6-0 at No.2 singles. Jesse Schneeberger started strong in his No.4 singles match. He was broken once and lost 6-3 but then couldn't carry the momentum into the second set and lost 6-0.
Concordia will stay at home for their next MIAC match. The Cobbers will host St. John's on Saturday, Mar. 28 at 2:30. The dual is scheduled to be played at Courts Plus in Fargo.
