Cobbers Drop Non-Conference Battle At Hamline
ST. PAUL, Minn. (11/27/24)---Concordia and Hamline were tied 1-1 heading into the third period of their non-conference game, but then the Cobbers gave up two goals in a span of 6:30 at the start of the final frame and lost 3-2 in a non-conference game in St. Paul.
The two teams traded goals midway through the first and second periods of play. Hamline (2-5-0) opened the scoring with a goal at the 12:18 mark of the first period. The goal came on a 4-on-4 situation with the Pipers taking advantage of a turnover in the neutral zone and turning it into a 2-on-1 break.
Concordia (4-5-0) tied the game midway through the second stanza when the Cobber forecheck battled to keep the puck in the Hamline zone. The play came out from behind the Piper goal and a cross-ice pass found the stick of the puck Tal Halliday who was camped at the top of the right faceoff circle. His shot went off the post and came straight to Hunter Olson who banged home the rebound from the left side of the net.
The strike at 10:36 was Olson's first of the year. Halliday picked up his second assist on the equalizer.
Neither team was able to pot the go-ahead goal in the final 9:24 of the second period and the teams skated to the second intermission tied at 1-1.
The game changed in the second minute of the third period as Hamline scored the first of their early-period goals at 1:48.
The Pipers added the eventual game-tying goal at 6:27. The goal came just after Concordia had killed off a power play. CC was unable to get the puck out of the zone and Hamline was able to score before the Cobber player in the penalty box could get back in the zone.
Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe would answer with a power play goal only 2:27 after Hamline took the 3-1 lead. The Pipers were whistled for an elbowing penalty at 8:35 and Henkemeyer got CC within one just 19 seconds into the man advantage.
First-year defenseman Jackson Lucia fired a shot from the middle of the blue line and Henkemeyer-Howe was able to tip home the puck from on top of the crease.
The goal at 8:54 was Henkemeyer-Howe's team-leading fourth of the year. Lucia and Mason Plante were awarded the assists on the play.
Concordia turned up the pressure in the final 5 minutes of play and had nine shots on net but couldn't come up with the equalizer.
The Cobbers outshot Hamline 34-29 in the game, including a 13-9 margin in the third period.
Concordia was 1-for-3 on the power while the Pipers were held scoreless in their two man-advantage situations
Freshman goalie Philippe De Champlain made his first collegiate start and turned aside 26 of the 29 shots he faced.
Concordia will have a break for the Thanksgiving holiday and return to action on Friday, Dec. 6 when they play St. Mary's in Winona at 7 p.m.
