Cobbers Shake Off Rust In Third Period, Down Falcons 5-2
MEQUON, Wis. (11/01/24)---It took Concordia 40 minutes to shake off the rust of the offseason as they exploded for five goals in the third period to rally past Concordia (Wis.) 5-2 in the season opener.
The Cobbers trailed 1-0 heading into the final period of play but then tied the game in the second minute of the third frame and then put up four unanswered goals in the final 8 minutes of play to come away with the 3-goal victory.
It's Concordia's second straight season-opening win and third in the last four years. The Cobbers downed nationally-ranked Aurora 4-1 last season. CC is 7-2-1 in the last 10 season openers.
The Cobbers held a lopsided 34-18 advantage in shots on goal in the first two periods of play, but it was the Falcons who netted the only goal when they scored in the final minute of the first period.
Congratulations to anyone who had sophomore Blaise Miller as the player to score the Cobbers' first goal of the season. Miller notched his second career goal at 1:33 of the third to tie the game at 1-1. Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe earned the assist on the first goal of the year. It would be the first of his two points on the night.
The Falcons regained the 1-goal lead at 5:28 before the Cobbers' 4-goal wave crashed on their shore.
Senior Mason Plante notched the first of his two goals to tie the game at 2-2 at 12:17.
Concordia took its first lead of the season when Henkemeyer-Howe finished off a sequence from Plante and LA Dodgers fan Joe Harguindeguy. The goal at 13:53 set up the 2-goal finish for CC.
Plante picked up the insurance goal when he recorded the team's first power play nugget of the year. Braden Costello and Caden Triggs set up the Cobbers' fourth goal to extend the lead to 4-2.
Troy Dahlheimer finished off the scoring when he slid home the fifth goal with 31 ticks left on the clock.
The Cobbers finished the game with a 48-26 edge in shots on goal.
Sophomore netminder Dane Couture made 24 saves to record his fourth career win.
The Cobbers went 1-for-5 on the power play and didn't allow the Falcone to score on their two PP attempts.
The same two teams will finish off the 2-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
