Overtime Rerun Ends In Loss At St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (2/07/14)—Playing in their seventh overtime game since the start of January, Concordia gave up a goal 2:27 into the extra session and lost 5-4 at St. Olaf. It was the Cobbers' first regulation overtime loss of the season.  

Concordia saw their four-game unbeaten streak come to an end despite  a pair of goals from both Caleb Suderman and Tucker Coborn, The loss drops the Cobbers to 11-7-4 overall and 5-5-3 in the MIAC. CC still earns a point in the conference standings with the loss in OT and is still in fourth place in the league standings.

The Cobbers have now gone to overtime in seven of the 14 games they have played since the Christmas break.

The two teams traded goals the entire night with neither squad being able to pull away. The Oles got on the board first and then had leads of 2-1, 3-2, 4-3 and finally 5-4. Each time St. Olaf would score, Concordia had an answer until the final three minutes of the extra period.

Coborn tied the game at 1-1 with an unassisted goal at 13:08 of the first period and then the Oles scored in the final three minutes to take a 2-1 lead into the first break.

Suderman put up his first goal of the night on a power play just 1:31 into the second frame and CC was level for the second time in the game at 2-2. St. Olaf countered with a tally less than two minutes later and then Suderman finished off the trio of early second-period goals when he netted his league-leading 15th goal of the season at 4:03. Jordie Bancroft assisted on both of Suderman's scores and Andrew Deters picked up an assist on the second goal.

The scoring in regulation would be capped midway through the third period. The Oles went ahead 4-3 at 6:53 but then Coborn earned his second nugget of the contest at 9:21 to tie the game at 4-4. Rylan Henley and Joe Becker were credited with the assists on the game-tying goal.

The teams were almost identical in shots on goal. St. Olaf enjoyed a slim 36-35 edge in shots for the game. Cobber senior goalie Kelly Andrew made 31 saves while Ole goalie Steve Papciak stopped also 31 shots to pick up his ninth win of the year.

The same two teams will finish off the two-game series on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m.
