Newcomers Lead Cobbers At Season-Opening Augsburg Invite

HAM LAKE, Minn. (9/04/22)—Freshmen Gabe Benson and Landon Olson led Concordia at the season-opening Augsburg Invite. The pair of Fargo natives finished with a 2-day total of 155 and tied for 28th in the final individual standings.

The newcomers helped the Cobbers post a 2-day total of 623 (314-309) which was good for a tie for eighth place. Concordia finished in the field in total number of birdies (14) for the weekend, and were also seventh in Par 4 scoring at 4.33.

Benson started his college career by firing an 80 on Saturday, but then rallied and carded a 75 on Day 2. Benson led the team in total pars and Par 5 scoring. He had a pair of birdies for the tournament, both of which came on Sunday.

Olson, who was 15th in the tournament in scoring on Par 4s (4.15), took the reverse route of Benson for the invite. He opened with a 72, but then dropped back to 83 on Day 2. The 72 he posted on Saturday was the low round of the tourney by any Cobber player. Olson made all three of his birdies at the tournament on Day 1 – and all three came on Par 4s.

Junior Justin Lamp and sophomore Colton Westra tied for No.3 on the team – and both players improved from Saturday to Sunday. Lamp shot an 83 on Day 1 and then six shots to post a 77 on Sunday and finish at 160. Westra, who played the tournament as an individual, opened with an 82 and then came home in 78 on Sunday. Westra led the team in scoring on Par 3 holes (3.25).
