A MASTER-ful Spring Opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/11/14)—Concordia opened the spring season by beating Minn.-Morris 4.5-0.5 in a Ryder Cup dual-meet format. The Cobbers won four of the five individual matches on the day with the fifth ending in a tie.

The individual-match format is scored with the winner of each hole getting a point. The individual who scores the most points over the course of 18 holes records a single point for his team. If a match is tied after 18 holes both players earn 0.5 points for his team. The winning team is determined by cumulative total points.

The biggest margin of victory on the day was posted by Cobber sophomore Max Smith who came away with a 9&7 victory after 11 holes.  Smith won the 11th hole which gave him nine points. That lead was insurmountable with only seven holes to play.

All four of the Concordia individual-match wins were decided before the start of the 14th hole. Alex Koopmeiners went off in the No.2 spot and claimed a 6&5 victory. Cade Montplaisir won after 12 holes and earned a 7&6 win. Freshman Michael Waataja won the 13th hole to grab a 7&5 win.

The lone match that went the distance came at the No.1 spot where junior Coy Papachek tied his opponent after the full 18 holes. Papachek was playing his first golf of the season after spending the semester studying in Spain.

Concordia will return to regular stroke play when they participate in the Concordia Triangular with Valley City State and Jamestown College on Monday, Apr. 14 athe Meadows Golf Course in Moorhead.
