Cobbers Fall In Close Game At MIAC-Leading Carleton
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/05/23)---Concordia battled league-leading Carleton through eight lead changes and 10 different tie scores in the first 35-minutes of the first game of the 2023 calendar year. The Knights won the game by going on a 10-3 run in the final 4-minutes of the second half to claim the 70-63 win.
The Cobbers led for the majority of the first half, and took a 29-26 lead into the halftime break. Concordia continued to stay in front for the first 10-minutes of the second period, before Carleton took their final lead of the game at the 8:18 mark.
The loss is only the second in the last five games for Concordia who are now 5-7 in all games and 3-4 in conference play. The Knights remain atop the league standings with a 5-1 MIAC mark and a 10-1 record in overall games.
The statistical categories were nearly even for the entire game for the two teams. The Cobbers shot 40.7% (24-for-59) from the floor, 36.8% (7-for-19) from outside the arc and 88.9% (8-for-9) from the free throw line. Carleton countered by shooting 49.0% (25-for-51) from the floor, 31.8% (7-for-22) from distance and 81.3% (13-for-16) from the free throw line.
Carleton held a slim 24-20 advantage in points in the paint, while the Cobbers countered with an 8-5 edge in second-chance points.
Sophomore Dylan Inniger scored eight of his team-high 13 points in the second half. He also led the team with six rebounds.
Matthew Johnson equaled Inniger's point total at 13 on a 2-for-4 shooting night from 3-point range. He also had two boards and two assists.
Jackson Jangula and Rowan Nelson were the other two members of CC that put up double-digit scoring totals. Jangula was 5-for-9 from the floor and had 12 points to go along with four rebounds. Nelson added 10 points and six rebounds.
UP NEXT: Concordia will have a bye on Saturday before returning to action on Wednesday, Jan. 11 when they play at St. John's at 7 p.m.
