2-Run Innings Cost Cobbers Against Husson

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (3/6/24)---Concordia gave up a quartet of 2-run innings and lost to Husson (Maine) at the midway point of their annual spring training trip to Florida.

The Cobbers never led as they had their 3-game win streak come to an end. CC is now 3-3 on the year.

Husson (2-2) brought the bats out early after the game was delayed for an hour due to weather. The Eagles scored twice in the first and two more times in the second.

Concordia got to within 4-2 in the bottom of the second. Chance Bye singled home Ben Shumansky after Shumansky drove a 1-out double to center field. Caiden Kjelstrom came through with a single up the middle to plate the Cobbers second run. CC had the bases loaded with one out by a 6-4-3 double-play ended Concordia's rally train.

The Cobbers fell behind 6-2 after Husson put up their third 2-run frame of the game. CC got to within three runs after five innings when they put up single runs in the fourth and fifth frames.

The two single runs both came via sacrifice flies. Bye collected his second RBI with a fly ball to center field in the fourth and Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe plated the final run of the game for Concordia when he lofted a fly ball to center field that scored Jake Christianson.

Concordia was outhit 12-11 in the game. Senior outfielder Justin Kloster had a team-high three hits on the day. He had three singles in the game and now leads the Cobbers in hitting. Kloster is hitting .474 over the first six games of the year.

Thomas Horan and David Dorsey had the multiple-hit games for CC. Horan was 2-for-4 with a double and Dorsey went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Cobbers used three pitchers for the 9-inning game. Alex Rudquist started and was relieved by Grant Anderson in the second inning. Anderson went 5.1 innings and struck out five, then gave way to senior Skylar Timmer who finished off the final 2.0 innings.

UP NEXT: Concordia will play a twinbill against John Carroll (Ohio) on Thursday, Mar. 7 in Auburndale, Fla.
