Cobbers Drop MIAC-Opening Twinbill In St. Peter

ST. PETER (4/07/23)---Concordia lost 3-2 and 8-1 at Gustavus in the MIAC opener for the Cobbers.
 
Concordia allowed the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth in Game 1 and then had the Gusties break open a 3-2 score line with five runs in the fifth and seventh innings of Game 2.
 
The Cobbers are now 6-12 overall this season. GAC ups their record to 9-8 in all games and 4-0 in conference play.
 
The day started in the Cobbers' favor, with Concordia taking a 1-0 lead in the very first frame of the opener. Andy Gravdahl coaxed a 1-out walk, advanced to second on an infield hit from Matt Gruber and then scored on Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe's single to left field.
 
Concordia had a chance to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third after Caiden Kjelstrom led off with a single down the left-field line and advanced to second on a ground out. Gravdahl came through with a single to center but it wasn't deep enough to score Kjelstrom, and he was stranded on third after a strikeout and ground out.
 
The Gusties plated single runs in the third and fourth frames before the Cobbers tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth. Henkemeyer-Howe went the other way with a pitch and doubled down the left-field line to start the frame. He would advance to third on a passed ball, and score on Wyatt Gunkel's sacrifice fly to center field.
 
Gustavus notched the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a 2-out solo home run down the left-field line.
 
Concordia was outhit 7-6 in the opener. Henkemeyer-Howe and Kjelstrom had 2-hit games, while Gravdahl and Gruber added the other two base hits for CC. The Cobbers were 3-for-11 (.272) with runners on base and 0-for-7 with two outs in the inning.
 
Senior Ashwin Stratton went the distance on the hill. He allowed seven hits, struck out six and is now 2-3 on the year.
 
The Cobbers never led in the finale as they gave up single runs in the first and second before getting to within one run in the top of the third. Gustavus would then score a lone run in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the seventh to push the final total to 8-1.
 
Kjelstrom came through with the lone RBI for CC when he singled home Carter Mulcahy after Mulcahy posted a leadoff single through the left side of the infield.
 
Concordia had six hits in Game 2 as well. Henkemeyer-Howe was the only CC player with more than one hit in the game as he went 2-for-4 and was 4-for-7 on the day. He is now hitting .300 on the season. His double in the fourth inning of the nightcap gave hime a team-leading four 2-baggers.
 
Henkemeyer-Howe is now 7-for-13 in the team's last four games.
 
Kjelstrom had a hit in each game to extend his team-leading hit streak to six games.
 
Jacoby Nold started Game 2 and went 4.0 innings. He allowed six hits and three earned runs. Kyle Cluff, Luke Levasseur, Ethan Beyer and Mitch Porter finished the game, with Levasseur being the most successful. He went 1.1 innings and didn't allow a hit or walk. Levassuer dropped his ERA to 3.38 in his fourth outing of the year.
 
UP NEXT: Concordia will face Augsburg in a DH on Monday, Apr. 10 at 12 p.m. at St. John's. The twinbill was originally scheduled to be played at Concordia, but the copious amount of snow still on the ground in the F-M area changed that plan.
