Cobbers Fall To Waynesburg On Day 3 In Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (03/01/22)--- Concordia fell behind early, was held hitless until the seventh inning and lost 10-1 to Waynesburg (Pa.) on their third day in Florida.

The loss is the second of the year for the Cobbers who are now 1-2 in their three games on their spring trip.

Waynesburg (1-2) did all their damage in the first and sixth frames. They posted four runs in the opening inning of play and then added six more in the sixth.

Concordia finally got their offensive rolling in the seventh when senior Andy Gravdahl led off the inning with a single to break up the no-hit bid. He would advance to second on a ground out to second, and then score on a single from junior Payton Reed. It was Reed's first hit, and RBI, as a Cobber.

The Cobbers also threatened in the eighth inning when freshman Jake Christianson led off the inning with a double – his first collegiate extra-base hit. Thomas Horan then came through with a 1-out single that pushed Christianson to third base. Unfortunately for CC, the inning would come to a halt on a double play in the very next at-bat.

Concordia was able to use 17 players in the game, and got to see six different pitchers against live competition.

Freshman Jacoby Nold got his first collegiate start and went the first 5.0 innings. He allowed four earned runs and five hits. Bryan Weideman, Ethan Beyer, Matt Gruber, Christianson and Max Boran all followed Nold – with no pitcher posting more than 1.0 innings on the bump.

Beyer, Gruber, Christianson and Boran combined to throw 3.1 innings of shutout baseball. They only allowed one hit during that time.

Gravdahl and Horan have at least one hit in all three games for the Cobbers. The top 2 hitters in the CC order are now hitting a combined .345 for the year.

UP NEXT: Concordia will play one of its two doubleheaders in Florida when they square off against Moravian (Pa.) on Thursday, Mar. 3 beginning at 8:30 a.m.
