Playoff Chances Lost In Arden Hills

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (5/7/12)—Concordia dropped a pair of games to Bethel on Monday in Arden Hills and had their playoff chances come to an end. The Cobbers lost 4-3 in the first game that had been suspended from Saturday and then lost 10-2 in game 2.

Concordia needed to win both games against the Royals to have a chance to make the playoffs but wound up losing both and finishes the season with an 18-20 overall record and a 9-11 mark in the MIAC.

The Cobbers entered Monday's first game tied at 3-3 after play had been suspended after five innings on Saturday. Concordia was retired in order in the top of the sixth and then the Royals came up with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to score the game-winning run. The Cobbers had a threat in the seventh inning. Patrick Skogen stole second base with two outs in the frame after he pinch ran for Brian Guler who had singled to start the inning. Unfortunately a ground out to second base ended the game.

Concordia was outhit 11-5 in the two-part first game. Erik Hiedeman was the only CC player with more than one hit in the game. He went 2-for-3 and drove in two of the Cobbers' three runs. Zach Frappier pitched the first five innings on Saturday and allowed three earned runs and struck out two. Bryce Feia pitched the sixth inning and was saddled with his first loss of the season.

The second game was all Bethel as they scored at least one run in each of the first five innings. They posted single scores in the first and second and then added crooked numbers in the third, fourth and fifth frames. Concordia scored their lone runs of the game in the seventh inning.

Concordia had seven hits in the nightcap. Like the first game, only one CC player had more than one hit. Chris Gilson was 2-for-3 and scored one of the two runs. Mike Rose pinch hit in the seventh inning and drove in both runs with a single to right-center field.
