Clutch Hits Go And Come In Split With St. Olaf

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/04/12)—Despite outhitting St. Olaf 24-10 in their doubleheader on Wednesday and getting two-hit pitching performance from sophomore hurler Jackson Meland, Concordia had to settle for a split as they lost the opener 1-0 and then came back to cruise to an 11-1 win in the nightcap.

Meland held the Oles to just a pair of hits in the first game but Concordia was never able to come up with the timely hit and lost by a single run. St. Olaf scored in the top of the seventh inning after getting a bunt single and then playing small ball to get the runner home. Meland's only other hit allowed came in the third inning. The Cobbers stranded 12 runners in game 1 and were 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position. CC had the bases loaded on three different occasions but failed to score each time.

St. Olaf (8-13/1-3 MIAC) starting pitcher Brady Sand put the Cobber hitters to sleep by striking out 10 and pitching out of jam after jam. He saved his best for last when Concordia loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning but were unable to score after Sand got the final out of the game on a ground ball to third.

A pair of Concordia players had more than one hit in the first game. Braden Rahman was 2-for-3 and walked once while Brad Olson was 2-for-4.

Concordia (10-9/2-2 MIAC) left little doubt in the second game. They took their first-game aggression out on the second-game pitchers from St. Olaf and scored eight times in the very first inning. The Cobbers had six of their top seven hitters in the lineup all get two hits in the second game. Brad Olson was 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to seven games and go 4-for-7 on the day. Michael Olson also pushed his hit streak to seven games with a 2-for-3 performance.

Cobber freshman starting pitcher Nate Wendorf allowed one run and a pair of hits in the very first inning but then settled down and did not allow another run to score in his 5.0 innings of work. Chris Gilson came on in relief and pitched the final 2.0 innings and gave up just one hit.

Concordia will hit the road for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 7 when they play at St. John's at 1 p.m.
