Nygaard & Rengo Continue Assault On Record Book

FARGO, N.D. (2/8/15)---Kyla Nygaard and Emily Rengo continue to go fast – really, really fast – and continue to push each other into the record book.

The lightning-fast track duo led Concordia at the 2-day NDSU Bison Open and Multi-Event Meet.

Nygaard and Rengo got the Cobbers started at NDSU with the Top 2 times in school history in the 300 meters. Both Nygaard and Rengo broke the previous school record for the 300, but it was Nygaard who will be atop the program's all-time list as she had the slight edge with a school-record time of 41.06. Rengo was right behind and crossed the line only .14 of a second later with a time of 41.20.

Nygaard's record time makes it the second meet in a row where she has set an individual school record. Both Nygaard and Rengo came back later in the meet and ran season-best times in the 400. Nygaard finished eighth overall with a mark of 58.98, with Rengo finishing 11th with a time of 60.07. Nygaard and Rengo now rank fourth and sixth in the MIAC this year.

The Cobbers pentathletes finally got to compete in a full pentathlon. Jenna Kalevik led Concordia with a personal-best score of 2967, placing tenth overall and 11th on the all-time Cobber list. Kalevik is currently ranked third in the MIAC. She placed sixth in last year's conference championship meet. Peyton Selle was right behind Kalevik. Selle, who is the reigning MIAC indoor pentathlon champion, placed 13th overall with a score of 2852. That score ranks her fourth in the MIAC this year.

The highest place finish of any CC athlete at the meet went to first-year distance runner Kelyn Henry-Perlich. Henry-Perlich took third in the 1000 meters with a time of 3:08.74. That time ranks 11th in the MIAC this year. She also came back to post a 16th-place finish in the 800. Henry-Perlich now ranks ninth overall in the MIAC after she ran 2:24.83. She now ranks in the Top 12 in the MIAC for three events – the mile being the other of the three.

Staying with the endurance events, it was another first-year athlete who finished inside the Top 10. Ashley Nelson got personal bests in the mile and 3K. She ran under 5:30 in the mile for the first time in her career. Nelson posted a time of 5:28.73, placing 18th overall in the meet.

Nelson also had a great performance in the 3000 where she ran a personal best time of 10:40.89 finishing seventh. Fellow first-year trickster Brooklyn Hart was close behind and finished 10th with a time of 10:51.10. Both runners rank inside the top 20 in the MIAC for the 3000. Nelson ranks tenth and Hart is No.18 on the list.

In the field events, the highest-place finish came from first-year Brynley Coleman. Coleman took tenth in the pole vault with a height of 10-08. Coleman currently ranks fourth in the MIAC this year.

A pair of Top 20 finishes highlighted the throwing events. Miranda Travis took 16th with a throw of 37-05.75 in the shot put and Brooke Kangas took 14th in the weight throw with a distance of 45-07.25. Both throwers rank inside the Top 10 in the MIAC in their events.

The Cobbers will finally get to compete against fellow MIAC schools when they head to the site of this year's MIAC Indoor Championship Meet. Concordia will compete in the St. Benedict Invite at St. John's University on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m.
