Selle Rallies To Win MIAC Pentathlon Championship

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (02/24/22)---Concordia sophomore Peyton Selle proved that her title in the MIAC heptathlon last spring was no fluke, as she rallied in the final event of the indoor pentathlon and claimed the victory at the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet.

Selle can now claim the unofficial title of "MIAC Greatest Athlete" after overcoming a 16-point deficit in the 800 meters – the final event of the five in the pentathlon. She finished the meet with 3,098 points which is the fifth most in program history and No.16 on the list for Division III this year.

Selle becomes the first Cobber athlete to win the pentathlon at the MIAC Indoor Meet since Kaari Jensen earned the victory back in 2013.

A pair of first-year athletes earned Top 15 finishes in their very first collegiate multi-event championship meet. Jenna Kalevik was 10th with 2,188 points, while 2-sport athlete Jordyn Johnson was 13th with a final total of 1,898.

Selle recorded Top 3 finishes in four of the five different events at the conference pentathlon and was fourth in the other event.

Selle started her championship trek by winning the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.69. That earned her 838 points - and a 12-point lead to start the competition.

Selle was then second in both the high jump and shot put to give her a 43-point lead over second-place competitor Justus Floren of St. Benedict. Selle recorded a height of 5-00.25 in the high jump which gaver her 655 points, and had a distance of 32-07.50 in the shot put which upped her 3-event total to 2,019 points.

Selle fell behind after the long jump when she finished fourth with a mark of 15-06.25. Floren won the event at 16-03.00, and the 546 points she earned allowed her to pass Sell by 16 points heading into the final event of the day.

Selle then came through with a season-best time of 2:38.35 in the 800 meters, which was good for third place and 592 points. That total enabled her to pass Floren by 34 points and claim the pentathlon championship.
