Counterattack Costs The Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/10/23)---Concordia did everything but score in their 1-0 loss against Wis.-Stout. The Cobbers controlled play, held the ball in the Blue Devils' end for the majority of the game, held an advantage in shots and corners but couldn't find the back of the net and dropped the 1-goal decision in their final game of the weekend.

THE 411: Concordia created numerous chances throughout the game, but were done in by a counterattack in the 74th minute of play. CC lost the ball in the middle third of the field, and Stout was able to get the ball on the Cobber backline in quick fashion. A through ball beat the last CC defender and sent a Stout attacker in on goal. Concordia goalie Kaitlin Petrich made the stop on the initial breakaway attempt. The rebound was picked up by a second Blue attacker, and she was able to make enough contact on the ball to put it into the net. Concordia had five shots and three corner kicks in the final 14 minutes of play but couldn't convert and lost 1-0 for the second time in 2023.

THE NEXT LEVEL: Freshman Emma Sheflo led the Cobbers in shots in the past three games. She had a season-high three on Sunday and now has six for the season.

THE NUMBERS GAME: Concordia held a 12-6 edge in total shots and a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Cobbers had a decided 8-1 margin in corner kicks.

INDIVIDUALLY SPEAKING: In addition to Sheflo's three shots, senior Sophia Robinson and junior Chloe Sollom had two shots each as the trio combined for seven of the squad's 12 shots. Petrich made three saves in goal for CC and has been on the wrong end of a pair of 1-0 decisions this season.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have a 6-day break before they open MIAC by hosting Carleton on Saturday. Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. The Knights are 3-1 on the year.
