Kubesh & Zierden Shine At #2 Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (2/13/20)---Concordia held a 3-0 lead after one match against No.2-ranked Augsburg but then the Auggies rattled off seven straight bonus-point wins and went on to claim a 40-9 victory in Minneapolis.

The dual is the final event of the "regular season" for the Cobbers who finish the year with a 6-5 record in dual meets. Augsburg is now 7-2 in dual meets with their only two losses coming to No.1-ranked Wartburg.

Junior Cole Kubesh got Concordia off to a perfect start as he earned a 6-3 decision in the first match of the night at 125. The first match of the night featured one of the most point-filled first periods of the dual. The two wrestlers combined for seven of the nine points in the match in the opening three minutes.

Kubesh suffered a takedown after just a minute of action. He then got a reversal 11-seconds later to tie the match at 2-2. Justin Stauffacher from Augsburg then earned an escape before Kubesh took the lead for good with a takedown with 1:12 left in the period.

Kubesh would get a point for stalling from Stauffacher in the second period after Stauffacher chose the down position to start the period. The final point came from riding time where Kubesh had accumulated 3:33 from being in the top position.

The win was Kubesh's team-leading 20th of the year. He is now 20-8 on the year.

Concordia's other victory came at 197 where freshman Gabe Zierden recorded a pin towards the end of the first period. Zierden gave up a takedown to start the match but then escaped 30-seconds later. The winning move came from a takedown with 52-seconds left in the opening period. Zierden was then able to turn his opponent's shoulders to the mat and got the pin only 5-seconds after the takedown.

Zierden is now 19-9 on the year and has recorded six victories by pin.

UP NEXT: The Cobbers will have a 2-week training period to get ready for the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional meet which will also be held at Augsburg on Feb. 28-29.
