Friese Nets 2 In 1-Goal Game At Wis.-Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. (12/14/24)---Senior Jerica Friese scored two goals in Concordia's 4-3 loss at Wis.-Superior. The Cobbers conceded two consecutive goals in the second period and third period and dropped its second 1-goal decision against the Yellowjackets.

Concordia (1-7-0) tied the game at 2-2 at 5:41 of the second period before the Yellowjackets went on their game-deicing run by scoring midway through the second period and in the first minute of the third frame to earn the victory.

Friese netted the Cobbers' first goal at 8:45 of the first period and scored the last goal with 1:26 left in the final period. It marked Friese's first multiple-goal game since Dec. 16 of last season when the Cobbers beat Superior 7-3 at home.

Friese's first goal came on the power play when she camped in front of the net and was able to tap home a rebound after the puck skidded past the Yellowjackets' goalie. Memphis Mertens and Morgan Sauvageau were credited with the assists. For Mertens it was her team-leading fifth of the year.

The teams finished the opening 20 minutes of play deadlocked at 1-1 before Superior took a 2-1 lead at the 31-second mark of the second period. Sauvageau tied the game in the sixth minute of the second period when she skated the puck out from the boards, went all the way to the net and lifted the puck into the top shelf.

It was Sauvageau's team-leading sixth goal of the season and she has scored in three of the team's seven games. Friese and Taylor Severson picked up the helpers on the game-tying strike.

Wis.-Superior (6-6-2) opened up a 2-goal lead with scores at 8:46 of the second and at the 41-second mark of the third.

The game would stay at 4-2 until Friese netted her second goal of the game in the 19th minute of play after the Cobbers had pulled goalie Maggie Seeley. Friese's second strike was almost a carbon copy of her first goal as she tapped home a rebound from the doorstep.

Severson recorded her second assist of the game and she now has four for the season.

Concordia was outshot 33-29 in the game with Sauvageau posting seven shots on goal and Mertens adding four.

The Cobbers went 1-for-5 on the power play and have now scored a power play goal in three of their last five games. CC held Superior scoreless in their four PP attempts.

Seeley, who was making her first collegiate start, stopped 29 shots.

Concordia will have three weeks off for the holiday break before returning to action when they host No.2-ranked Wis.-River Falls on Jan. 3-4.
