10-Goal Scoring Spree In Cobber/Cardinal Series Finale

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/7/24)---The Cobbers' series with St. Mary's had something for every hockey fan. Fans of goaltending and low-scoring games were treated to a 2-1 thriller on Friday night, while fans goals and end-to-end action had their moment in the series finale on Saturday.
 
The Cobbers and the Cardinals combined to score 10 goals in the series finale with St. Mary's prevailing 6-4 at the end of the 60 minutes.
 
Concordia (1-5-0, 1-5-0 MIAC) never led in the game but never let St. Mary's get comfortable at any point during the game. 
 
St. Mary's (8-4-0, 3-3-0 MIAC) held a 3-1 lead after the first period but the Cobbers cut the lead in half midway through the second frame. SMU pushed the lead to three goals by scoring consecutive goals at the end of the second and the start of the third periods. CC trimmed the margin to 5-3 midway through the third before the teams traded strikes in the final 4 minutes of play.
 
Sophomore Abbey Reule led the offensive surge for the Cobbers. She scored two of CC's four goals in the game – her first two goals of the season.
 
Reule's first goal tied the game at 1-1 at 4:30 of the first period. Abbey Hardwick earned the first of her two assists on the day. She would also get the assist on Reule's second strike in the third period. 
 
Morgan Sauvageau added to her team-leading goal total at 9:43 of the second period. Taylor Severson and Livia Hoff were awarded the helpers on Sauvageau's fifth goal of the year. That total puts her at the top of the MIAC scoring list for goals in conference games. 
 
Reule brought Concordia back to within two goals at 11:58 of the third period with Hardwick and Memphis Mertens getting credit for the assists. Mertens has four assists this season which is tied for the top spot in the MIAC in league games. 
 
Taylyn Cope finished off the scoring in the game when she poked home a rebound at 18:33 of the third. Anna Nelson and Allie Emineth had the assists on Cope's second goal of the year.
 
St. Mary's held a slim 30-28 edge in shots on goal. Mertens led CC with five shots on target. 
 
The Cobbers split the goaltending duties. Senior Ashlea Arvidson started the game and played the first 20 minutes. She made seven saves. Hailee Bailey entered at the start of the second period and stopped 17 shots in the final 40 minutes of play.
 
Concordia will have its first non-conference game of the year when they play at Wis.-Superior in a 2-game series on Dec. 13-14.
