Lots Of Shots In Loss At St. Mary's
WINONA, Minn. (11/13/21)---Concordia nearly doubled up St. Mary's in shots on goals, but conceded a pair of third-period goals and lost 3-1 to the Cardinals in the second game of the first conference series.
The Cobbers tied the game at 1-1 in the middle of the second period, but then the Cardinals scored the game-winning goal in the second minute of the third period and added an empty-net strike in the final minute of the frame to capture the 2-goal victory.
The loss in the series finale drops the Cobbers to .500 for the season. After sweeping Finlandia in the first series of the year, Concordia is now 2-2-0.
Concordia nearly doubled up St. Mary's in the shots on goal department in the game. The Cobbers put up a season-high 45 shots on goal, including 19 alone in the first 20 minutes of play. Concordia outshot the Cardinals 81-51 in the series. CC is now averaging 38.5 shots per game which is second best in the MIAC.
St. Mary's (3-2-0) got on the board first when they scored at the 18:44 mark of the first period. The goal came against the run of play as the Cobbers held the advantage in offensive zone time and outshot SMU 19-12 in the period.
The Cobbers would have to wait until the 13th minute of the middle frame to tie the score. CC was put on the power play after a Cardinals' tripping penalty at the 11:01 mark.
Junior McKenzie Oelkers scored her first goal of the season in the middle of the power play with assists going to Libby Hinrichs and Jordie Egerdahl.
Once again Concordia had the upper hand in scoring chances and wound up outshooting SMU 13-5 in the second period.
The Cardinals cashed the game-winning goal at 1:28 of the final period and then added an empty net goal at 19:32.
CC held a 13-9 advantage in shots in the third period and finished the game by outshooting St. Mary's 45-26.
Senior defenseman Hannah Christian had a game-high six shots. She now has 18 shots for the year which is tied for seventh most in the MIAC. Grace Doerring added five shots and Hinrichs put up four shots on the SMU goal.
Kiana Flaig made 23 saves in goal for the Cobbers.
UP NEXT: Concordia will host its first MIAC series of the year when they face St. Olaf in a 2-game series on Nov. 19-20 at the Moorhead Sports Center.
