Another Northfield Nail-Biter

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/18/25)---A second consecutive Saturday trip turned into a second straight nail-biter for the Cobbers.

Concordia led for 39:01 of the 40:00 minutes in their game at Carleton but only held a double-digit lead for 1:35 as they battled their way to a 54-48 win over the Knights.

The same scenario played out last weekend for the Cobbers when they had to fight all the way to the end to beat St. Olaf 60-57.

The victory on Saturday was the fourth straight for Concordia, who move to 10-5 in all games and 5-3 in conference play. CC is now tied for fifth place in the league standings.

The Cobbers held a narrow 13-12 lead after the first quarter but then outscored the Knights 16-8 in the second stanza to take a 29-20 lead into the break. CC opened up the first of its two double-digit leads on a jumper by senior Makayla Anderson before Carleton cut the margin to eight points at the end of the third quarter of play.

Carleton (2-13, 1-7 MIAC) scored eight of the first 12 points in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 42-38 with 6:51 left to play, but a free throw from Greta Tollefson, a 3-pointer from Carlee Sieben and another jumper from Anderson gave the Cobbers their second 10-point lead of the game with 5:23 left in regulation.

The lead would stay between 7-9 points until the final seconds of the contest when the Knights hit a couple of free throws and made a shot from distance.

The Cobbers were January-like from outside the arc as they went 5-for-30 (16.7%) from distance. The 30 attempted 3-pointers is the most in a game this season and the 16.7% shooting percentage from outside the arc marked the first time this year that CC has shot under 25.0% from distance.

The ice-cold shooting numbers carried over to the field goal and free throw departments as well. Concordia shot 33.9% (21-for-62) from the floor and 58.3% (7-for-12) from the foul line.

The Knights posted similar shooting numbers. They shot 37.3% (19-for-51) from the field and 23.1% (3-for-13) from outside the arc and were an identical 7-for-12 from the free throw line.

Sieben and Anderson were the only Cobber players with more than nine points in the game. Sieben posted a team-high 18 points, while Anderson went for 16 points and 12 rebounds to come away with her fourth straight double-double.

Senior Jordyn Kahler added nine points and collected six boards.

Concordia will host a pair of games next week. CC will open the week by facing Macalester on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
