Second-Half Spurt Stops Carleton

Second-Half Spurt Stops Carleton

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/11/12)—Concordia used a 16-4 run to start the second half and busted open a tie game at the break to roll to an 83-65 win over Carleton on Tuesday.

The Cobbers shot 55.9% (19-for-34) from the field in the decisive second period and scored 50 points as they picked up their fourth win in the last five games. Concordia is now 5-3 in all games and 4-1 in MIAC play. On the opposite side of the ledger, the Knights shot 35.7% (10-for-28) from the floor in the second half as they fell for the third straight game and drop to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the MIAC.

The Cobber "bigs" led the charge in the second half. Starting center Alexandra Lippert and reserve center Kelsey Walloch both had 10 points in the second period and were a combined 9-for-11 from the floor. Concordia also did a great job around the basket in the second frame – holding a 24-11 edge in rebounding and a 7-2 margin in second-chance points.

Concordia received a balanced scoring attack from both starters and bench personnel. Concordia had six players with at least eight points and four players in double digits. Lippert and Alley Fisher had 14 points each to lead the CC offense. Lippert went 7-for-11 from the floor and also collected five rebounds. Tricia Sorensen and Walloch had 12 points each. Sorensen had a team-high eight rebounds. Erika Jossart came away with nine points, six assists and three steals.

The 50 second-half points is the most in a single game this season. It is only the fourth time in 2012 that Concordia has scored 40 or more points in a half. The second-half outburst helped the Cobbers break the 80-point plateau for the second straight game. CC has now shot 48.0% for the second consecutive game. That marks only the third time they have shot better than 45.0% from the floor.

The Cobbers will have almost a four-week break for the holiday break before returning to the floor on Wednesday, Jan. 2 when they play at St. Olaf at 5:45 p.m.
