Gavin Ties Single-Game Strikeout Record

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/21/22)---Chalk up another strikeout record for Megan Gavin.

Gavin fanned 20 batters in the Cobbers' opener with Gustavus, but was the hard-luck loser in a 3-0 loss in 11 innings. Concordia dropped the second game 9-1 in five innings.

The 20 strikeouts ties a school, and conference, record for Ks in a single game. Jill Reinert also had 20 strikeouts for Concordia in a 12-inning game in 2007 against Bethel.

Neither team was able to get on the board in the first 10 innings of Game 1. Concordia had runners in scoring position in the first, second, third, fourth, eighth and ninth innings before the international runner rule was put into play in the 10th frame.

The Cobbers hit .056 (1-for-18) with runners in scoring position, .050 (1-for-20) with runners on base and .083 (1-for-12) with two outs in an inning in the first game.

Concordia (6-16, 0-8 MIAC) outhit the Gusties 6-5 in Game 1. Freshman outfielder Rosie Unglaub accounted for half the Cobbers' hits. She went 3-for-5 and stole three bases. The 3-hit game is a season-high for Unglaub.

Kenzie Leither, Emma Redlin and Danielle Lyon had the other base hits for CC.

Gavin pitched all 11.0 innings and struck out half the batters she faced. She fanned 20 Gusties, allowed only one earned run and five hits. She had six multiple strikeout frames and fanned the side in the second, third and fifth frames.

Concordia took the early lead in Game 2 when Caitlin Culleton connected on her first collegiate home run in the bottom of the first.

Gustavus (11-15, 6-6 MIAC) put up single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead, then broke the game open in the fourth when they plated seven runners on five hits.

The Cobbers had two hits in the finale. Besides the long ball from Culleton, Emma Bowman went 1-for-1 with a leadoff single in the fifth frame.

UP NEXT: Concordia will take to the road to play a pair of MIAC doubleheaders on the weekend. CC will play at Macalester on Saturday, Apr. 2,3 and then face St. Kate's in St. Paul on Sunday, Apr. 24 in a series that was originally scheduled to be played in Moorhead.
