GRAND FORKS, N.D. (2/1/25)---The Cobbers had to leave the Fargo-Moorhead area for the first time this season as they headed north to Grand Forks to compete against NCAA Division I, II and NAIA schools at the UND Open.
The meet featured some of the toughest competition the Cobbers will face this year. They were not intimidated and wound up posting a slew of personal bests and Top 25 MIAC ranks.
Tyler Goss kicked things off for the Cobbers with a third-place finish in the 5000 meters. He ran a time of 15:46 (15:56.72c) which slides him into the 21st athlete in school history to run under 16 minutes indoors. The time is his fastest indoor 5k and puts him 18th in the 5k this year in the MIAC.
Goss was followed by his brother, Brady Goss, who had a run for the record books as well. Goss ran the mile in the time of 4:14.24 (4:17.5) which makes him the second Cobber in history to run under 4:18. The time earned him a sixth-place finish at the meet and ranks third in the MIAC this year. Goss placed eighth in this event at last year's conference meet.
Following in the Goss brothers' footsteps was another Top 10 finisher in last year's conference meet, Logan Clark. The junior produced nearly identical results in the 60-meter hurdles prelims and finals. He placed third in both races, with his prelim time of 8.83 being the faster of the two by 0.06 seconds. That time moves Clark up to No.10 in the MIAC this year.
First-year athlete Tommy Schreiner came away with a pair of 14th-place finishes. He ran a personal best time of 7.20 seconds in the 60-meter dash, and 22.83 (23.23c) in the 200 meters. His time in the 60 meters puts him in 10th place in the MIAC this year, and the 200 time ranks him 17th.
Schreiner came back to compete in the long jump where he had his best place finish of the day. He took fifth with a leap of 21-07.25. Schreiner came into the day ranked third in the MIAC in long jump.
Next up for the Cobbers was another athlete ranked in the top ten in the MIAC this year. First-year pole vaulter, Tyler Evans, cleared a height of 13-05.25. That height was good for a third-place finish, one of three Cobbers who placed top three individually.
The Cobbers also got a pair of Top 10 finishes by Gabe Thompson and Peyton Johnsrud. Thompson took ninth in the triple jump with a lead of 40-07.5. Johnsrud also took ninth when he jumped over the high jump bar that was set at 6-00.75. Both jumpers are ranked inside the Top 10 in their events in the MIAC this year.
The top relay of the meet for the Cobbers was turned in by the 4x400-meter relay team who recorded a third-place finish. The team of Trevor Tiongson, Ryan Richardson, Brady Goss, and Carlson ended the meet for the Cobbers with a time of 3:24.26 (3:27.33c) which leapfrogs the quartet all the way into second in the MIAC this year. The finishing time was also a season best for the Cobbers by over six seconds.
Concordia will get to stay in the F-M area for their next competition as they will compete in the 2-day NDSU Bison Open & Multi-Event starting on Friday, February 7 at 12 p.m.
