Cobbers Blanked By Johnnies

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/15/24)---Concordia gave up a pair of goals in the first half and one more in the second stanza and lost 3-0 to St. John's.

The loss puts an end to the Cobbers' 2-game unbeaten streak. CC is now 1-10-2 in all games and 0-4-2 in the MIAC. The Johnnies upped their record to 4-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in league play.

The teams played between the penalty areas for the first 15 minutes of play with neither team creating any quality chances.

The game changed in the 18th minute of play when the Cobbers conceded a free kick from 40 yards out of goal on the left wing. The St. John's player served the ball into the CC penalty area and Concordia goalie Jensen Waltz was able to get a hand on the cross to punch the ball out of the air. The ball landed right at the feet of an SJU defender at the back post and he was able to tap home the ball at the 17:34 mark.        

Concordia's first shot of the game came in the 34th minute of play when sophomore Rico Rolle fired a shot on target at the 33:28 mark.

St. John's added its second goal at 39:12 before Rolle would have the second shot of the half at 41:58.

The Cobbers were able to put up more offense in the second half and took the game to the Johnnies but it was SJU who came away with the only goal of the half. St. John's capped the scoring at 67:36 on a through ball behind the Cobber defense from the top of the penalty area.

Concordia was outshot 13-7 in total shots and 10-4 in shots on goal. Rolle led CC with his two shots.

Waltz made seven saves in goal for the Cobbers.

Concordia will travel to St. Peter to take No.5-ranked Gustavus on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 3:30 p.m.
