Esto Es Fútbol Papa
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (10/12/24)---Fans of the La Liga side Getafe are familiar with head coach Jose Bordalas' motto of "esto es fútbol papa". Translated it means "that is soccer man". And the motto played out to perfection for Concordia in its game at Augsburg.
Concordia was outshot and was on the wrong end of a 21-0 advantage in corner kicks but was still able to play its game and come away with a 1-1 tie against one of the Top 5 teams in the MIAC. Esto es fútbol papa.
It is the second straight tie for Concordia, who came away with a 0-0 deadlock last Saturday in Moorhead against St. Mary's.
The Cobbers allowed Augsburg to have possession throughout the first half and tried to counter in behind the Auggies. Neither team was able to score in the first 45 minutes of play. The Auggies held a 15-2 edge in total shots in the first with Cobber keeper Jensen Waltz turning aside all five shots he faced.
The game changed drastically in the fifth minute of the second half when Augsburg was whistled for a foul on the right wing, 30 yards out from goal. Dylan Sipe took the ensuing free kick and whipped a serve into the Auggies' penalty area. Senior Edwin Rasidovic was able to get free from his defender and ran onto the ball at the top of the 6-yard box. He was able to flick the ball with his head into the lower left corner to give CC a 1-0 lead.
The goal at 49:25 was Rasidovic's first of the year and Sipe recorded his first helper of 2024.
The goal put the pressure on the Augsburg offense which played into the hands of the Cobbers who settled into a defensive set and kept the Auggies from getting chances from inside the penalty area.
Unfortunately for Concordia, the Auggies were able to net the equalizer with 11:19 left in the second half.
Neither team had a shot on goal in the final 10 minutes of play and the Cobbers were able to come up with a pair of blocked shots during that stretch.
Augsburg held a 30-3 advantage in total shots and a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. The Auggies also held a rarely seen 21-0 margin in corner kicks.
Waltz made six saves for the 90 minutes.
Concordia will put its 2-game tie streak on the line when they host St. John's on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 4:30 p.m.
