Cobbers Drop Conference Opener
MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/17/24)---Concordia gave up a goal in each half and dropped a 2-0 decision to St. Scholastica in the conference opener for both teams.
The loss drops the Cobbers' season record to 1-5-0, while the Saints win for the first time on the year and move to 1-5-1.
Concordia held the statistical advantage in total shots, shots on goal and corner kicks but could never find a way into the net. The Cobbers outshot St. Scholastica 14-6 in total shots and 6-3 in shots on frame.
The Cobbers' best chance in the first half came off the foot of freshman Xabier Citte, who drove the ball to within 25 yards of the Saints' goal and delivered a well-struck shot that was going just under the crossbar until the CSS keeper reached out at the last second and tipped the ball over the bar.
Concordia upped the pressure in the second goal and the Saints' second strike came against the run of play when they were awarded a penalty kick at the 57:40 mark and converted the ensuing spot kick.
The Cobbers were able to outshoot St. Scholastica 7-0 in the final 30 minutes as they continued to pressure on the Saints' defense.
The closest chance in the final 30 minutes came when Rico Rolle was left alone from 10 yards out but his shot sailed inches over the crossbar.
Rolle led all players with three total shots while Noah Meyer had a team-high two shots on goal.
Senior goalie Jensen Waltz, who stopped the majority of the St. Scholastica attacks with his ability to come out and control the penalty area, made a single save in the game.
Concordia will immediately step back on the field when they face Wis.-River Falls on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 1:45 p.m.
