LINCOLN, Neb. (9/8/24)---Concordia conceded a single goal in the first half and then two more in the second period and lost 3-0 at Neb. Wesleyan in the final game of their 2-game stretch over the weekend.
The Cobbers battled the Prairie Wolves through the first 39 minutes of the game with neither team allowing any quality chances.
The Neb. Wesleyan breakthrough came at 39:15 when they were awarded a free kick from 35 yards out on the left wing. The Prairie Wolf attacker served the ball towards the front post and 12 yards out from goal. A teammate ran onto the ball at the near-post service and deflected the ball just inside the left post. The strike at 39:41 proved to be the game-winning goal.
Concordia had a pair of shots by Noah Meyer blocked in the first 20 minutes of the second and also had a corner kick as they tried for the equalizer.
The "all important next goal" came at 66:46 when the Cobbers turned the ball over 40 yards out from goal. The NWU attacker dribbled to the top of the penalty area and then fired a low shot into the goal.
The final goal of the game was 12:59 after the second and came after a throw-in deep in Concordia's end.
Neb. Wesleyan held a slim 14-11 edge in total shots and a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Meyer had a team-high three total shots. He and Gavin Groshelle had the two shots on target for CC.
Jensen Waltz, making his fourth straight start in goal, turned aside three shots.
Concordia will return to Moorhead to host its home opener when they face Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m.
