A Long Second Half

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/16/23)---Concordia trailed Carleton 2-0 at halftime in their conference home opener. It's doubtful that anyone at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex could have predicted what would transpire in the final 45 minutes of play.

The Cobbers gave up three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period, four more in a span of 11:14 and lost 10-0.

The loss is the first in MIAC play for Concordia and evens their overall record at 3-3-0. Carleton remains unbeaten on the year and moves to 2-0-0 in the conference and 6-0-0 in all games.

The Cobbers started the game on the front foot and held the action in the Knights' end of the field for the first 15 minutes of play. Concordia posted two of their four corner kicks in the opening section of play and had a couple of chances from outside the penalty area.

Carleton eventually took control of the game just before they opened the scoring at the 28:44 mark. The turning point came just before the break when the Knights added a second goal in the 43rd minute of play.

Concordia's best chance of the game came on a penalty kick attempt in the 61st minute. Junior Leo Dunor won the spot kick when he beat a Carleton defender on the left wing and was fouled just inside the penalty area. Mason Weninger took the PK but his shot was stopped on a good diving save by the Knights' goalie.

Concordia held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks, while Carleton had a 24-4 advantage in total shots and 13-1 in shots on goal.

Jensen Waltz started the game in goal for CC and played the first 68:55. He made three saves. Cooper Svaleson finished off the final 21:05 in his first collegiate contest.
