Second-Half Scoring Slumps Stymie Cobber Chances

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/26/22)---A pair of tough scoring stretches in the second half cost Concordia in its first game after the Thanksgiving break.

The Cobbers were outscored 10-0 coming out of the halftime after CC led 43-39 at the break. Concordia the cut the lead to only three points at 60-57 with 8:40 left in the second half, but a 10-2 Gustie streak pushed the margin to double digits and the Cobbers were never able to get within six points for the remainder of the game.

Concordia (1-4, 1-2 MIAC) was 1-for-11 from the field with two turnovers in the two critical stretches in the final 20 minutes of play.

The Cobbers were able to build a 7-point lead in the opening minutes of the game after Rowan Nelson drove for a layup, Matthew Johnson drained a shot from outside the arc and Alex Huber knocked down a mid-range jumper.

CC held a 7-point edge before Gustavus went on a 7-0 run of their own to tie the game at 16-16. The teams would then trade the lead nine times in the final 10-minutes of the first period, before the Cobbers closed out the half on a 7-2 streak.

Concordia shot a solid 44.6% (25-for-56) from the floor, 33.3% (7-for-21) from distance and 77.3% (17-for-22) from the foul stripe. Unfortunately for the Cobbers, their totals were a bit shy of the Gusties' hot hand all game long. GAC shot 51.9% (28-for-54) from the field, 52.6% (10-for-19) from 3-point range and 78.9% (15-for-19) from the free throw line.

Gustavus (2-3, 2-1 MIAC) also had an edge arou8nd the basket. The Gusties outrebounded Concordia 35-22.

The Cobbers had four players with at least 10 points. Nelson, Huber, Jackson Jangula and Dylan Inniger combined for 53 of the team's 74 points.

Nelson was 7-for-14 from the floor, and came away with a game-high 17 points. He also had a team-high five rebounds. Jangula was 5-for-8 from the field, and added 15 points and a season-high seven assists.

Huber posted 10 points and four rebounds, while Inniger was 2-for-2 from outside the arc and had 11 points.  

UP NEXT: Concordia will head out-of-conference for its next game. The Cobbers will head to New Ulm to take on UMAC foe Martin Luther on Monday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m.
