Half Marathon Tie Doesn't Equate To Full Marathon Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (02/09/22)---Concordia's half marathon time was good for a tie for first place. Unfortunately for the Cobbers, the race was a full marathon and they dropped a 74-51 decision at home to Gustavus.

Concordia battled with the Gusties for the first 20 minutes of play and tied the game for the fifth time on a Rowan Nelson layup in the final minute of the opening period of [lay to head to the locker room at the half deadlocked at 27-27.

The second 13.1 miles were all Gustavus they built a 10-point lead in the first 10 minutes of play, and then went on an 18-5 run over a span of 7:44 in the back half of the period to seize control of the game.   

The Gusties (12-7, 9-5 MIAC) won the game on the strength of their second-half shooting. GAC shot 59.4% (19-for-32) from the floor in the final 20 minutes of play and connected on 60.0% (6-for-10) of their shots from 3-point range.

The Cobbers (4-14, 3-12 MIAC) shot 34.5% (19-for-55) from the field and 28.6% (4-for-14) from outside the arc for the game.

Both teams had 35 rebounds in the game, while Gustavus held a 34-22 advantage in points in the paint and an 18-4 margin in points off of turnovers.

Jackson Jangula and Rowan Nelson combined to score 17 of the team's 24 points in the second half. CC didn't have another player with more than two points in the second period of play.

Jangula finished with a team-high 12 points, hauled down four boards and went 5-for-5 from the foul line. Nelson finished with 11 points and grabbed five boards. He also had another monstrous dunk in the second half, marking the second straight game he has brought the crowd to its feet with a hammer slam.

David Birkeland had a team-high six rebounds to go along with eight points, while Dylan Inniger scored nine points and had four rebounds.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have a rare Saturday off during the regular season. CC will return to action when they travel to Duluth to take on St. Scholastica on Monday, Feb. 14 at 7:45 p.m.
