MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/02/16)—A dramatic finish highlighted the first-ever cross country meet held on the campus of Concordia. Junior Sarah Curran led for most of the 5k race but was edged in the final 100 yards and placed second.

Curran's second-place finish was one of six Top 9 finishes for the Cobbers as they won the three-team event by 17 points. Concordia finished with 24 team points while Minn.-Morris was second at 41 and Jamestown placed third at 71.

"I got a little nervy and jumped the gun and went out a little faster than I thought I would," commented Curran. "At the last 200 meters I was like this is it, it's gonna hurt. And it hurt a lot but she got me right at the end."

Curran's energetic run helped the rest of the team put up quality finishes. Concordia had six runners place in the Top 9 of the meet.

A pair of sophomores were right behind Curran in third and fourth while a third sophomore came home in seventh place. Brianna Gruenberg was just off the pace set by the lead two runners and came home in third place at 19:58.03. Sierra Kolle was with Gruenberg until the final leg of the course and placed fourth at 20:18.0.

Maria West led a pack of three Cobber runners who all finished within nine seconds of one another and were all in the Top 9 at the finish. West strode home in 21:01.1 and was seventh. West was followed by Kara Andersen in eighth with a finishing time of 21:03.4 and Sara Whiteman was ninth at 21:09.2.

All told the Cobbers had 11 runners finish in the Top 16 of the first-ever home meet.

"It was really fun and it was so awesome to actually host our own race," added Curran. "It was amazing."

Concordia will stay in town for their next meet when they compete in the MSU Moorhead Twilight Meet on Friday, Sept. 9 at 8:15 p.m. at the Tri-City soccer complex.
