Cobbers Save Best For Last In Fall Season

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/06/24)---The Cobbers saved their best of the fall for the final match. Concordia went back-and-forth at Macalester on Sunday before dropping a nail-biting 5-4 decision. The heartbreaker in St. Paul capped off a 2-match conference road weekend for Concordia. CC opened the 2-day trip by losing 9-0 at St. Olaf.

Concordia sprinted out of the starting gate against the Scots by winning two of the three doubles matches. The Cobber No.2 doubles tandem of Ava Lowman and Isabelle Smith outlasted their opponents in the tie-breaker. After the match was tied at 7-7, Lowman and Smith pulled away to post a 7-3 win in the tie-breaker.

The bout at No.3 doubles didn't need extra points. Carley Motz and Annalise Skrade rolled to an 8-3 win to stake CC to a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Motz and Skrade would pull double duty in singles play as both players recorded straight-set wins. Motz went 6-4, 6-4 at No.6 singles to earn her first collegiate singles victory.

Skrade finished just ahead of Motz as she made short work of her opponent at No.4 singles. Skrade cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win to post her first singles triumph of the year.

Concordia had chances to win in a pair of other singles matches but lost both in the super-set tie-breaker. Lowman battled until the end at No.3 singles before losing 1-6, 7-6 (7), 10-8 and Smith fell 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 at No.5 singles.

The 5-4 loss is a marked improvement over last season where the Cobbers lost 7-2 to the Scots at home.

The Cobbers started the weekend with a 9-0 loss at St. Olaf. The closest match of the day came at No.2 singles where Anna Hacker fell in in straight sets but lost in the tie-breaker in the second set.
