A Nail-Biter In The 2nd Match Of Weekend Doubleheader

FARGO, N.D. (3/17/24)---Concordia nearly hung on to beat St. Mary's in the second match of its MIAC doubleheader weekend. The Cobbers won two of the three doubles matches against the Cardinals but then lost a pair of singles matches in the super-set tie-breaker and lost 5-4.

Concordia (3-16, 0-7 MIAC) opened the weekend by losing 9-0 to regionally-ranked Gustavus in St. Peter on Saturday.

The Cobbers came home and responded by playing their closest conference match of the year.

All three doubles matches on Sunday against St. Mary's were decided by identical 8-5 scorelines. The Cobbers' No.1 doubles duo of Raquel Egge and Mary Skorich claimed the first 8-5 win and then Anna Hacker and Erin Borchard followed suit at No.2 doubles.

Egge now has six doubles wins and three have come with Skorich. The win for Hacker and Borchard was the first of the season.

Egge and Borchard went on to claim the singles wins for Concordia. Egge survived a tie-breaker in the first set in her match at No.1 singles to come away with a straight-set victory at 7-6 (4), 6-4.

The win for Egge was her fourth of the season. It was also her 33rd career victory in maroon and gold.

Borchard recorded her team-leading seventh singles win of the season when she pulled out the straight-set victory at No.4 singles. She won 6-4 in the first set and then capped off the team point with a 7-5 victory in set No.2.

The two swing matches in the team contest came No.3 and No.6 singles. Hacker overcame a 6-2 loss in the first set to roar back and win 6-1 in the second. The Cardinals were able to get key service points to post the 10-6 win in the super-set.

Like Hacker at No.3 singles, Lizzie Allan lost the first set only to rebound and tie the bout. Allan was narrowly edged 7-5 in the opener and then rolled to a 6-1 win. The tie-breaker was a nail-biter with each player posting quality shots on key points. In the end, SMU was able to get a break and won 10-8.
