A Very Busy Home Weekend
FARGO, N.D. (3/21/21)---Concordia completed the rare 3-match weekend on Sunday. The Cobbers started the busy weekend by hosting Gustavus on Friday, they followed that up by matching up against St. Thomas on Saturday and then faced Bethel in an afternoon matinee on Sunday. CC lost 9-0 in all three matches but gained experience for the seven remaining matches on the schedule.
Concordia opened the 3-match string by facing perennial league power Gustavus. The No.3 doubles team of Anna Hacker and Greta Reichmann lost 8-2 in the tightest match of the day in doubles play. For Reichmann, it was her very first match of the season and first collegiate match.
Hacker, Raquel Egge and Emily Savageau all won multiple games in singles play. Egge started slow but rallied in the second set and lost 6-1, 6-3 at No.1 singles. Savageau dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No.5 singles and Hacker played to the mirror opposite of Egge's match. She battled in the opener, and lost 6-3, but then fell 6-1 in the second set.
Savageau teamed with Carolyn Voss at the No.2 doubles spot and had the closest battle on Saturday against Division I-bound St. Thomas. Savageau and Voss, who had played once before as the No.2 doubles team, lost 8-2.
Savageau and Hacker once again gave the Cobbers a formidable duo at No.5 and No.6 singles. Both players staged solid rallies but both wound up losing by identical 6-2, 6-2 margins.
The weekend was capped off with the closest match of the three. The No.1 doubles team of Egge and Jenna Forknell played in the most dramatic match of the weekend. They went back-and-forth with their Bethel counterparts by wound up losing 8-6 in a match that could have gone either way.
Head Coach Zach Zitur changed the lineup on Sunday in order to get different players paired together. Voss and Hacker played at No.2 doubles while Taylor Partington and Abby Westrum got to see their first action of 2021 and lost 8-1 at No.3 doubles.
Savageau stayed in her No.5 spot in singles play and once again produced multiple-game wins. She fell 6-3, 6-1. Reichmann saw her first singles action and battled in the closest match in singles. She lost 6-2, 6-3 at No.6 singles.
UP NEXT: Concordia won't be as busy next weekend when they travel to St. Paul for their first road match of the year. The Cobbers will play at Northwestern on Saturday, Mar. 27 at 4:30 p.m.
