Bad News, Best News In St. Paul
ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/19/25)---Concordia's final road game of the regular season at Macalester proved the ol' mathematical axiom 3>2.
The Cobbers outrebounded the Scots and held a 34-16 advantage in points in the paint. Unfortunately for Concordia, Macalester knocked down nine more 3-point field goals on their way to a 81-67 win.
That was the bad news for the Cobbers on Wednesday night. The good news is that because of scores from around the MIAC, Concordia has clinched its second consecutive conference playoff berth.
The Cobbers are 7-8 in MIAC play and 11-13 overall. The 7-8 league record puts them in a tie for fifth place in the conference standings – two full games ahead of seventh-place Bethel with only one game remaining in the regular season.
The first four minutes of the game in St. Paul was all Concordia as they scored eight of the first 10 points in the game to take an 8-2 lead. The Scots responded with a 13-2 run and grabbed a 15-10 lead. The game would stay within four points until the final 2:30 of the first half when Macalester closed out the period with a 6-2 stretch.
Concordia was never able to make a run at the Scots in the second half. They got to within five points at 40-35 with 17:00 left in the second half, but Macalester opened the game up with a 14-5 run to take a 14-point lead.
CC would make one last push at the double-digit lead and got to within eight points on a made lay-up by freshman Grady Guida with 2:03 to play. The Scots capped the game by scoring the final six points to push the final total to 81-67.
The Cobbers shots a solid 43.1% (25-for-58) from the field. CC made 28.0% (7-for-25) of their shots from outside the arc and went 10-for-12 from the free throw line.
Macalester (8-16, 5-10 MIAC) shot a similar 43.3% (26-for-60) from the floor but it was their nine more made 3-pointers that made the difference. They went 16-for-33 (48.5%) from distance and were 13-for-16 (81.3%) from the foul stripe.
The Cobbers enjoyed a 37-35 edge in rebounds.
Rowan Nelson led Concordia with 19 points while Jacob Cook put up 16 points and grabbed four boards.
Guida had a career game as he went 3-for-4 from outside the arc and finished with a season-high 15 points.
