Second-Half Surge Leads To Comeback Win

The Cobbers entered the second half trailing by 40-27. They proceeded to outscore the Cardinals 48-29 in the final 20 minutes of play and come away with the 6-point win.
Concordia (5-8, 1-3 MIAC) was led by their Big 3 interior players. Jackson Loge, Rowan Nelson, and Jacob Cook combined for 55 of the Cobbers' 75 points – with 34 of them coming in the second half.
Loge once again led the Cobbers, scoring a game-high 20 points. It was the fourth time this year he has recorded at least 20 points in a game. He also pulled down 13 rebounds, making it the eighth time this year he has achieved a double-double.
Loge leads the MIAC in rebounds, averaging 10.1 per game, with 94 defensive rebounds and 131 total. He is also in the Top 10 in scoring this season.
The first half started a back-and-forth match, with the score being tied at 14 with just over 10 minutes left in the half. The Cardinals then outscored the Cobbers 26-13, taking a 40-27 which was capped by a last-second 3-pointer.
The Cobbers slowly grinded their way back in the second half, eventually tying the game at 59-59 with 6:13 left.
Nelson hit a 3-pointer with 4:03 remaining to give Concordia its first lead of the half.
Concordia withstood a last-minute Cardinal rally, hitting six free throws in the final 2 minutes to secure the victory.
The Cobbers shot 40.7% (24-59) from the floor and 33.3% (6-18) from beyond the arc.
Concordia also connected on 67.7% (21-31) of their free throws.
The Cobbers defense held the Cardinals to 39.0% (23-59) from the floor in the game and held them to only 9-for-31 (29.0%) in the second half. St. Mary's was able to connect on 13-of-31 (40.6%) of their attempts from distance and shot 76.9% (10-13) from the line.
Rebounding was a major factor, as the Cobbers dominated the boards 46-23. Concordia, the top rebounding team in the MIAC, averages 39.7 total rebounds per game.
The Cobbers had a huge boost in the second half from junior Erik Hedstrom. Hedstrom came off the bench, and in a span of 10 minutes, had five rebounds, two assists, six points, a steal, and played lock-down defense as he helped the Cobbers erase their deficit.
The teams combined for 40 fouls and took 44 free throw attempts in total.
The Cobbers got another double-double from Cook, as he had 14 rebounds and 16 total points, hitting 6 of his 8 free throws.
Nelson also hit 4 of the Cobbers six three pointers, as he played in all but three minutes.
Concordia will have to wait a week before they travel down to Northfield and take on St. Olaf Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 pm, before returning home on Jan. 15 against St. John's.
