Buzzer Beater Ends Cobbers' Comeback
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (12/14/24)---Concordia's second-half comeback at Augsburg was ended in the final seconds of play when the Auggies connected on a long-range 3-pointer with .05 seconds left in regulation to come away with a 69-68 win.
The Cobbers erased a 3-point deficit midway through the second half and led for most of the remaining 10 minutes of the game before the teams traded shots from outside the arc to set up the dramatic final seconds of the game.
Concordia (3-6, 0-3 MIAC) led 65-64 with 30 seconds to play when Augsburg hit a pull-up jumper to take a 66-65 lead. Cobber Head Coach Tyler Bormann called timeout and set up an offensive sequence which led to a Kaden Pieper corner 3-pointer with 4 seconds left on the clock. The Auggies took the ball out, raced the ball up the floor, made a pass to the right corner where an Augsburg player drained a contested 3-pointer with .05 left on the clock to give Augsburg the 1-point win.
The game was close throughout as it had 11 lead changes and seven tie scores. Neither team had a double-digit lead throughout the 40 minutes of play with the Cobbers holding their biggest lead at 58-52 with 7:04 left in the second half.
The Cobbers finished the game by shooting 42.1% (24-for-57) from the floor and 28.6% (6-for-21) from distance. CC was also 14-for-21 (66.7%) from the free throw line.
Augsburg (4-4, 2-1 MIAC) made 43.1% (25-for-58) of their shots from the field, 39.1% (9-for-23) from 3-point range and a similar 66.7% (10-for-15) of their chances from the foul line.
CC held a decided 42-32 advantage in rebounds and also bettered the Auggies in points in the paint (34-26) and second-chance points (10-6).
Rowan Nelson led the Cobber charge in the second half. He scored 14 of his team-high 21 points in the final 20 minutes of play. Nelson was 8-for-18 from the floor and also added seven rebounds. The 21 points marked the second time this season he pas scored at least 20 points in a game.
Junior Jacob Cook had another huge game for CC. He scored 18 points and hauled down 13 rebounds to record his second double-double of the year. Cook's 13 rebounds are one shy of his season-best total.
Pieper was 2-for-3 from outside the arc and finished with 11 points. It is his second straight double-digit scoring total.
Jackson Loge led CC with four assists. He also added eight points and six rebounds.
Concordia will finish off the 2024 portion of its schedule when they host Crown on Friday, Dec. 20 at 5:30 p.m.
