Tupperware Defense Seals First Conference Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/23/23)---Like a quality Tupperware container, Concordia's defense completely sealed off the Macalester offense as the Cobbers posted a 1-0 win over the Scots.

Freshman Emma Sheflo's first-half goal proved to be the difference in the Cobbers' first conference win of the season. CC has now won two straight games and is 3-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in league play. Macalester loses for the first time in the MIAC and falls to 4-3-0 in all games and 2-1-0 in the conference.

THE 411:
Sheflo got behind the Macalester defense in the 10th minute of play and scored on the breakaway. She took a pass from midfielder Chloe Sollom and touched the ball past the on-rushing goalie at the top of the penalty area. Sheflo then hit a 1-time, left-footed shot that beat the recovering defenders to the goal line.

Concordia had a golden opportunity to double its lead when freshman Lucy Halverson got behind the Macalester defense on the left wing and beat the goalie to the ball. Halverson touched the ball past the keeper, but unfortunately for the Cobbers, it rolled just wide of the right post.

The Concordia backline of Emily Larsen, Darby Hannan, Hallie Thompson and Ella Shinn limited the Scots to only five total shots. Macalester didn't have any open chances in the penalty area in the final 60 minutes of play as the Cobbers posted their third shutout of the season.

THE NEXT LEVEL: The Cobber backline defes have only allowed five goals this season, which is third-fewest in the conference. CC has a goals against average of 0.71. That mark is a massive improvement over their 1.53 GAA from last year.

THE NEXT LEVEL 2.0: Concordia went 2-0 on the week with a 2-1 win at Dakota Wesleyan on Monday and the 1-0 victory over Macalester. Sheflo was responsible for all three goals for the Cobbers on the week and now leads the team in scoring with four goals. Her four scores are tied for fifth in the conference.

BY THE NUMBERS: Concordia held a 13-5 edge in total shots and a 6-4 margin in shots on goal. CC enjoyed a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

INDIVIDUALLY SPEAKING: Cobber goalie Bre Nelson made four saves in the game and is now 2-0-1 on the year. She hasn't allowed a goal all season and has a shutout streak of 385 minutes. Sheflo led the offense with four total shots and two shots on frame. Sophia Robinson had three shots and put two on frame.

UP NEXT: Concordia will put its 2-game win streak on the line when they play at Hamline on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m.
