Cobbers Drop Conference Opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/16/23)---A pair of goals in the second half proved to be the difference in the Cobbers' 2-0 loss to Carleton in Concordia's conference opener.

The Knights scored at the 1:08 mark of the second stanza and added an insurance marker in the 80th minute to earn the 2-goal win.

The loss drops Concordia's overall record to 1-3-1. Carleton remains at the top of the MIAC with a 2-0-0 conference record and a 5-1-0 overall mark.

The Cobbers' best stretch of the game came after they conceded the first goal. Concordia ramped up its offensive attack and would eventually outshoot the Knights 8-5 in the second 45 minutes of play.

Both teams finished the game with seven shots on target. Chloe Sollom and Hannah Mukhtar both had two shots on frame.

Sollom was a part of the most dramatic moment of the game. Concordia was able to win possession of the ball 30 yards out from the Carleton goal with time winding down in the second half. Sollom got possession of the ball and fired a shot with 3 ticks left on the game clock. The ball hit the underside of the crossbar and went over the goal line to earn CC the buzzer beater. After consulting with the linesman, the referee waved off the goal saying the ball crossed the line after the clock reached 0:00.

Carleton held a 13-9 advantage in total shots for the game and had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Cobber keeper Kaitlin Petrich made fives in the game, including a pair on breakaways that kept the score tied at 0-0 in the first half.
