19 Leads To 8 And 2 At North Country Open

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (1/22/23)---Concordia sent 19 wrestlers to the North Country Open hosted by St. John's and came away with eight Top 5 finishes and a pair of weight-class winners.

Freshman Kie Anderson and senior Sam Kulseth both won titles in the silver division by going unbeaten on the day.

Anderson went 2-0 at 125 in the silver division. He pinned Teagyn Ludwig of St. John's in his first match and then came through with an 8-0 win over Clayson Mele in the title bout. Anderson is now 5-4 on the season and has won five of his last seven matches.

Kulseth tied for the most wins by any Cobber at the Invite. He won the 141-lb weight class in the silver division by posting a 3-0 record. He opened with a pin over teammate Lance Fretwell, and then claimed decision wins in the semifinal and title matches. Kulseth is now 10-8 for the season.

Freshman heavyweight Mason Swanson placed third in the silver division with a 2-1 record. His only loss was a 7-5 decision against Jadon Mims from Division II St. Cloud State. He claimed a 4-0 win in the consolation semifinal and then won 7-2 in the third-place match. Swanson also joins the double-digit win club for the season. He is now 10-6.

The top finish in the gold division was turned in by Kellen Schauer who was fourth in the 149-lb weight class. Schauer went 1-2 for the invite and is now 15-9 on the year.

Alex Spray and Alex McPhee had the other Top 5 finishes in the golf division for Concordia. Spray was fifth at 133 with a 1-2 record, while McPhee went 3-1 and finished fifth at 157. The three wins for McPhee bring his season total to 15, and he is now 15-12.          

UP NEXT: The Cobbers return to Illinois when they compete in the Pete Wilson Invite hosted by Wheaton College on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28.
