The Wrong End Of A Mirror Image

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/22/14)—Concordia came out on the short end of a mirror-image game from Friday night. The Cobbers scored a goal early, never trailed until the third period and then gave up a pair of late goals and lost 4-2 to Bethel.

Concordia was on the receiving end of the same scenario on Friday night as they scored a goal late in the third period to come away with the win. The teams wind up splitting the two-game series which pushes the Cobbers' overall record to 1-5-0 on the season. CC is 1-3-0 in the MIAC. Bethel moves to 4-3-1 in all games and 2-1-1 in league play.

Senior forward Bekah Wright staked the Cobbers to a 1-0 lead in the second minute of play. She scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Jessie Kongelf at the 1:12 mark.

Concordia would spend most of the first period in the Bethel end and wound up outshooting the Royals 7-4 in the period. Despite having a significant edge in "zone time", the Cobbers were only able to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

The second and third periods would be completely different as Bethel turned up the energy level and started to disrupt Concordia's break out. The Cobbers trouble in breaking the puck out of their own zone led to more chances for Bethel.

Concordia did have a golden opportunity to up their lead to 2-0 but a goalmouth scramble which resulted in the puck crossing the goal line into the net was ruled to have been kicked in by a Concordia player and the goal was disallowed.

CC goalie Madison Denny kept BU off the scoreboard until the 13:48 mark of the middle frame. That started a streak of two straight goals for the Royals and they would finish the game by notching four of the final five goals in the game.

Bethel took a 2-1 lead in the fifth minute of the final period and then the Cobbers tied the game just 8-seconds into a 5-on-3 power play. Maddy Gendreau scored her first goal of the season with Amber Schaack picking up her first of the year on the goal at 7:33.

Concordia would never threaten for the remainder of the 5-on-4 power play. The Cobber penalty kill unit would then be put to the test as Bethel was awarded a 5-on-3 power play for almost a full two minutes and then they were given another man-advantage situation after the 2-man advantage ran out.

The Cobbers never recovered from the extended penalty kill situations and Bethel was able to net the game winner at the 15:21 mark. BU would add an empty net goal in the final 20 seconds of play to make the final score to 4-2.

Concordia had seven shots in the opening period but then only six in the final two periods combined. CC was outshot 21-13 for the game. Wright and Gendreau led the Cobbers with three shots each.

Denny finished with 17 saves on the day.

Concordia will now have a two-week break for the Thanksgiving holiday and will return to action on Friday, Dec.  5 when they host St. Thomas at 7 p.m.
