Two-Goal Lead Dissapears In Overtime Tie

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/22/13)—Concordia had a two-goal lead disappear in the third period against Augsburg and settled for a 3-3 overtime tie with the Auggies.

The tie knocks the Cobbers into fourth place in the MIAC standings with one game remaining in the regular season. Concordia is now 11-7-5 overall and 10-4-3 in league play. CC has now tied two of its last three games but remains unbeaten in its last seven contests.

The teams traded goals in a span of 1:04 in the first period. Concordia got on the board first when Madison Gendreau picked up her eighth goal of the season at the 13:56 mark. Abby Taffe earned the assist on the even-strength goal. The Auggies then tied the game at 15:00 on a power play goal. It would be the first of two on man-advantage situations for Augsburg.

Concordia looked to seize control of the game when they scored less than a minute into the second frame and added a third midway through the period. Lauren Riley collected her first collegiate goal at 47-seconds and then Bekah Wright added her second goal in the last four games when she scored at 12:56. Mickey Moran got the helper on Riley's tally and Kelsey Vandegrift and Jenna Westerham earned assists on CC's final goal of the game.

Augsburg (6-15-3/2-12-3 MIAC) started their third-period comeback with a goal at 4:06 and then tied the game in the final three minutes of play with their second power play goal of the night at 17:00.

The Cobbers were able to dominate the overtime period and outshot the Auggies 6-0 in the extra five minutes but could never come up with the game winner.

The contest pivoted around special teams where Augsburg went 2-for-5 while CC was held scoreless in its two attempts.

Concordia outshot Augsburg 38-28 for the game and has now outshot their opponent in the last seven games.

Cobber freshman goalie Madison Denny made 25 saves while Auggie netminder Brianna Schulz turned aside 35 shots.

The two teams will finish off the regular season when they play on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
