A Royally Painful Third Period

A Royally Painful Third Period

BLAINE, Minn. (11/03/12)--  Concordia gave up three unanswered goals in the third period against Bethel on Saturday and lost 4-1 in a non-conference game played at the National Sports Center in Blaine.

The loss is the first of the season for the Cobbers and drops their overall record to 1-1-2. Bethel wins for the third time in their first four games of the year and moves to 3-1-0.

The teams traded goals in the first period with Concordia conceding a power play goal to fall behind 1-0  and then tying the game on a goal by Anna Westmark at the 14:15 mark. Westmark's second goal of the season was assisted by Kelsey Vandegrift and Bekah Wright.

After scoring two goals on their first 16 shots of the game, the teams settled into a scoreless skate for the next 29 minutes. The teams couldn't light the lamp until the third period despite having a combined 30 shots during that stretch. Unfortunately for the Cobbers their scoring drought would continue while the Royals would get three goals in the final 14:46 of the third period.

Concordia went 0-for-3 on the power play while Bethel scored the opening goal of the game with a man up and was 1-for-4 in their man-advantage situations in the game. CC is now 4-for-22 on the power play in the season.

Bethel held a three-shot advantage in shots on goal for the game. Concordia had 30 shots in the three periods as compared to 33 for BU. CC goalie Madison Denny made 29 saves in her first collegiate start. Jess Newstrom stopped 29 shots in goal for the Royals.

Concordia will start the MIAC season when they play at St. Olaf on Friday, Nov. 9 and Saturday, Nov. 10. Both games will be played at the Northfield Ice Arena.
