Second-Half Stops Cobbers At Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. (12/07/22)---Everything was going well for the Cobbers in the first 30 minutes of play in their road game at Augsburg, and then the fourth quarter happened.

Concordia led 44-38 after three quarters at Augsburg, but went 1-for-10 from the floor and committed eight turnovers in the fourth period and lost 56-51 to the Auggies.

The loss is the second straight for the Cobbers who are 4-2 in all games and 3-2 in the MIAC. Augsburg wins for the fourth time in the last five games and is now 6-2 overall and a similar 3-2 in league contests.

The teams put up similar point totals in the first and third quarters, but the Cobbers were able to take a 6-point lead at the halftime break thanks to the hot shooting hand of sophomore Carlee Sieben. Sieben went 5-for-7 from 3-point range and had 17 points in the first two quarter as CC built a 33-27 lead.

The Cobbers shot 47.6% (10-for-21) from the field in the first half, and then 18.5% (5-for-27) in the second half. The tale from distance was the same as CC connected on 46.2% (6-for-13) of their shots in the opening two quarters, but then made only 15.4% (2-for-13) in the second half.

The two biggest statistical difference in the game were points in the paint and points off of turnovers. The Auggies were able to get the ball inside on a consistent basis and outscored the Cobbers 36-10 from around the basket. CC committed 21 turnovers in the game and Augsburg turned that into a 23-11 margin in points from miscues. It is the second straight game that Concordia has had at least 20 turnovers in the game. The Cobbers had 43 turnovers in their first four games of the year, which were all wins, and have had 44 miscues in the past two games.

Sieben finished the game by leading all players with 24 points. She was 5-for-9 from distance and 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Sieben also had three steals in the game.

Makayla Anderson came through with a career-high 14 rebounds.

Senior guard Autumn Thompson was 3-for-5 from the floor, 2-for-2 from outside the arc and had eight points for CC.
