Dead Ball Goals Determine Outcome At Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. (10/22/23)---In a game that featured four dead ball goals, Concordia gave up three unanswered strikes and lost 3-1 at regionally-ranked Wis.-Whitewater.

The Cobbers took a 1-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of the opening half on a penalty kick, but then gave up a strike on a free kick in the first half that tied the game, a goal off of a corner kick and then a third from a dead ball in the 73rd minute of play.

The loss is the third straight for Concordia, who falls to 4-9-2. The Warhawks win for the fourth time in the last five games and are now 12-1-4.

The Cobbers opened the scoring after a hand ball call against Whitewater. Gannon Brooks converted the ensuing spot kick at 12:46 to push CC to an early 1-0 lead. The goal was Brook's sixth of the season and second PK strike. Brooks is tied for the team lead in goals and has 13 total points on the year.

The Concordia lead would last until the 34th minute of play. A Cobber defender was whistled for a soul at the top of the penalty area on the right side of the goal. A Warhawk attacker tucked the direct kick around the inside of the wall and through a pile of players in front of the net.

The score would remain tied at 1-1 to the halftime break before Whitewater posted the game-winning goal in the 2nd minute of the final half. The goal came from a corner kick where a Whitewater player got free inside the 6-yard area and headed home the service from the corner kick.

The final goal came courtesy of a dead ball from 45 yards out from goal on the right wing. The service into the penalty area was met near the penalty spot and the header sailed into the right corner of the net.

Whitewater had a 24-10 lead in total shots and an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Brooks, Leo Dunor and Matthew Nemer all had two total shots in the game, with Dunor recording a team-high two shots on frame.

Cobber keeper Jensen Waltz came away with eight saves in the game and has 85 on the season.
