1-Goal Score Lines Unkind To Cobbers At Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (2/04/23)---Fans of good goaltending would have enjoyed Concordia's series finale at Augsburg. The two goalies in the game combined to stop 53 of the 54 shots they faced over the 60-minutes of play. The only blemish on that stat went against the Cobbers as they dropped a 1-0 decision.

The second straight 1-goal defeat drops Concordia into sixth place in the MIAC standings with four games left in the regular season. The Cobbers are now 6-6-0 in league play, and two points out of the final postseason spot with 17 total points in the standings. CC is 9-11-0 in all games.

Augsburg wins for the third straight game, all by a single score, and is now 8-4-0 in the MIAC and 12-8-1 overall. The Auggies have 24 points in the standings which is good for third place.

The lone goal in the game came midway through the second period. Jarod Blackowiak scored an unassisted goal at 12:41 that gave Augsburg a 1-0 lead, a lead that would hold up for the final 27-minutes of the game.

Concordia would step up their offensive attack in the third period as they outshot the Auggies 13-8 in the final 20-minutes of play. Neither team had a power play chance in the third period.

The Cobbers pulled goalie Matt Fitzgerald with 2:14 left in regulation, and got four good looks at the goal but a pair of shots from Braden Costello and one each from Kevin Ness and Joe Harguindeguy were turned aside by Augsburg goalie Samuel Vyletelka.

Concordia outshot Augsburg in the first and third periods, and ended the game with a 34-24 in shots on goal. Sophomore Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe led all players with six shots on frame.

Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play in the game and both teams generated four shots on goal in those man-advantage situations.

Fitzgerald was nearly perfect in the game as he stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced. He lowered his season GAA to 2.40 and has a 90.4% save percentage.

UP NEXT: The Cobbers will return to Moorhead for their final home games of the regular season. Concordia will host Gustavus on Feb. 10-11. Both games will be played at the Cullen Hockey Center in Moorhead.
