Cobbers Post Key MIAC Road Win At Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/14/23)---Concordia held off a late-charging Hamline team and posted a 65-60 win in St. Paul.

The Cobbers, who had close calls at the end of their last two games, used that experience to keep the Pipers from passing CC at the wire.

Concordia had a 14-point, second-half lead completely erased when Hamline tied the score at 56-56 with 3:03 to play, but then refused to let the Pipers get ahead and sealed the win with a 5-0 run in the final 2-minutes of the second half.

The Cobbers led for all but 4-minutes of play as they earned their sixth win of the season – and fourth in conference play. CC is now 6-8 overall and 4-5 in league play. They are currently 1-game out a 3-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings.

Hamline falls to 9-5 in all games and 5-4 in the MIAC. They are one of the four teams who are just above CC in the standings.

The Cobbers won the game with solid defense and timely shooting. CC held Hamline to only 17.4% (4-for-23) shooting from 3-point range. On the other end of the floor, Concordia shot 44.4% (24-for-54) from the field and 31.6% (6-for-19) from distance. The Cobbers were uncharacteristically mediocre from the free throw line. CC entered the gams in the Top 5 of the nation in free throw percentage, but went 11-for-16 (68.8%) from the foul line. It marked only the third time all year that CC has shot below 70.0% from the charity stripe.

Freshman Jacob Cook had his best game as a Cobber as he posted career-high numbers in points and rebounds. He led Concordia with 15 points and also grabbed seven boards.

Rowan Nelson and Dylan Inniger both finished with 11 points. Inniger also added seven rebounds.

Junior Matthew Johnson had a cold shooting night, but put his stamp on the game around the basket by coming away with a team-high eight rebounds.

UP NEXT: Concordia will finish off its 4-game road trip to start 2023 when they play at Macalester on Monday, Jan. 16 at 5:15 p.m. The Scots are also one of the four teams just ahead of the Cobbers in the standings.
