Cobbers Fall in Four Sets at UW-Superior
Behind a career night from Cayla Sailer, Concordia came out strong in its opener at the Yellowjacket Invite, but the Cobbers couldn’t sustain the momentum and fell in four sets to UW-Superior.
SUPERIOR, WIS. (9/19/25) — Concordia came out swinging on Thursday night, grabbing the opening set and setting the tone early, but the Cobbers couldn't hold off a push from UW-Superior and fell 3–1 (25-19, 22-25, 23-25, 17-25) in the Yellowjacket Invite.
The Cobbers looked sharp in the opener. Addy Klemin and Mallory Leitner gave CC the first spark with kills on the opening points, and from there, Concordia rolled. Cayla Sailer was electric, ripping three straight kills during a 6-0 run and finishing the set a perfect 7-for-7 at the net. With Betsy Schiltz spreading the offense with 11 assists and the front line teaming up for a pair of blocks, CC never trailed in a 25-19 win.
But the momentum shifted in the second. Concordia built a 12-7 lead only to see UWS rally with a 5-0 run. The Cobbers battled to the end and even fended off two set points, but the Yellowjackets squeaked out a 25-22 win to even the match.
The third set had the feel of a tug-of-war. CC edged ahead 11-9 after more kills from Sailer and Klemin, and later pulled within one at 23-22 on a clutch swing from Annie Horan. But again, the Jackets had the final push, sneaking away with a 25-23 win.
Superior carried that energy into the fourth, stringing together aces and quick kills to take control. Concordia kept fighting, Sailer, Horan, and Klemin all landed late kills, but UWS closed out the night with a 25-17 decision.
Sailer left her mark in a big way, finishing with 13 kills and a career-high 27 digs, leading CC on both ends of the floor. Horan stuffed the stat sheet with 10 kills, 18 digs, and seven blocks, while Klemin added eight kills and six blocks. Schiltz chipped in a steady 28 assists and 13 digs to round out the attack.
The Cobbers will look to bounce back on Saturday when they face Knox at 10 a.m. on day two of the Yellowjacket Invite.
