Royally Good Offensive Attack

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/06/16)—Concordia couldn't stop Bethel's offense at the net and lost 3-1 (25-12, 25-20, 25-27, 25-20) to the Royals in Arden Hills.

Bethel hit at least .230 in all three set wins and had seven players hit at least .200 as they dealt the Cobbers' only their second loss in the last six matches.

Concordia, who had won four of five heading into the conference match, is now 7-10 overall and 3-3 in the MIAC. Bethel wins for the third straight match and jumps their overall record to 13-6. Like the Cobbers, they are now 3-3 in league play.

The Cobbers never trailed in the first set as they fell behind 7-2 and then 12-5. CC wasn't able to hold back the BU attack as the Royals hit .290 on their way to the set win.

The second set was tight through the opening 23 points with Bethel holding a 12-11 lead. Concordia led 6-4 but then the Royals went on a 4-0 run midway through the set and won the final three points to take the 25-20 win. The Cobbers fought back from deficits of 10-6 and 12-7 to tie the third set at 16-16. CC then fought off one match point at 24-23 and then rallied to take the set 27-25. Concordia couldn't duplicate the late-set magic in the fourth as they gave up a 6-2 run after the score was 19-18 in favor of BU.

Concordia hit .139 as a team but that was offset with the .268 clip the Royals finished with. Bethel finished with 14 more kills and 13 more digs.

The Cobbers had a pair of players with double-digit kill totals. Haley Cuppett led the way with 15 winners while Emily Friedrich added 11. For the second straight match freshman Brianna Carney recorded a match-high six blocks.  She also had five kills.

Jena Klaphake came away with 37 assists and Macy Westerberg had a career-high 16 digs.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have the weekend off to celebrate the Homecoming festivities. The Cobbers will then return to action when they host St. Catherine on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
