All Even In Stevens

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (9/12/15)—After all was said and done; Concordia was all even in the second day of the Wis.-Stevens Point Invitational. The Cobbers swept Ripon in the opener and were then swept by No.6-ranked Stevens Point in the final match of the tournament.

The Cobbers are now 5-2 on the season and both losses have come against teams from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).  

Concordia never trailed against Ripon and cruised to a 25-14, 25-19, 25-20 win over the Red Hawks. The Cobbers hit at least .150 in all three sets and held Ripon under .090 for the three sets.  Concordia finished with a 38-26 edge in kills and came away with eight more digs and four more blocks.

Senior Olivia Wangensteen was the only player who finished with a double-digit kill total. Wangensteen came away with 13 winners and had a season-high .423 attack percentage. She also recorded eight digs. Korbyn Ross posted a team-high 15 digs and Mandy Mercil put up 22 assists.      

The second match swung at the back end of the second set. The Cobbers fell 25-11, 25-23, 25-15 to the nationally ranked Pointers. CC only hit above .000 in the second set while UWSP hit above .115 in all three sets and finished with a .419 attack percentage in the third set.

Freshman Tedi Ramberg led the Cobbers with six winners in the second match. Jena Klaphake had 13 assists while Mercil led the squad with 11 digs.   

ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM
Wangesnteen was the team's lone selection on the Pointer Invitational All-Tournament Team. She finished the day with 18 kills, 17 digs and one block.
    
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
Concordia had a 22-20 lead in the second set against Stevens Point but then gave up five of the final seven points and lost 25-23. The Cobbers gave up four straight points after taking the two-point lead and could never recover.

STAT STUFF
Concordia had 102 total attacks in the first match with Ripon and recorded 38 kills. Against Stevens Point the Cobbers had 118 total attacks and earned 28 kills.

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS
Wangensteen has had at least 10 kills in five of the team's seven matches this season. She now has 72 kills on the year after having only 115 in all of last season. Jena Klaphake had 24 assists on the day and now has 989 helpers for her career.   

WHAT'S NEXT
Concordia will begin MIAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 16 when they host Macalester at 7 p.m. The Cobbers swept the Scots last year in St. Paul. Macalester is currently 8-1 on the season.
